What's the Difference Between a Hybrid and a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)?

Hybrid

  • A vehicle is hybrid if it's 100% gasoline-fueled but doesn't rely solely on its gasoline engine for propulsion (defined as the action of driving or pushing forward). Hybrids have electric motors that sometimes power the car in order to delay the gasoline engine and save fuel. At times, both systems work together for added power. Electric motors function as generators when you press the brake.
  • Hybrids get energy at the same time from a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The engine and motor work together to power the car. The engine also uses gasoline to help recharge the battery which powers the electric motor.
  • Hybrids use gasoline engines to keep batteries charged as you drive. There is no need to plug them in.

Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)

  • PHEV's use a gasoline engine and an electric motor, but in different ways. A plug-in hybrid primarily uses its electric motor, which is powered by the battery. A plug-in hybrid won't use gas until the battery runs out of power. A plug-in hybrid uses its engine as a backup plan.
  • PHEV's can be plugged into a 120-volt household outlet or a 240-volt charging unit (or wall charger). A plug in-hybrid can be driven on pure electric power without burning any fuel.
  • A PHEV has a much larger battery and a means to recharge it using an external power source. A PHEV acts like an electric vehicle with the gasoline engine not being used when it's battery has to charge. The engine comes on when the battery runs down which allows the vehicle to continue as a regular gasoline hybrid. It also uses regenerative braking to save fuel.

Charging Your BMW: How and Where?

If you're not sure how long it takes to charge your BMW, the simplest answer is that it depends on the type of charging equipment that you use, and the electric installation that you have at your home. BMW recommends to purchase and install the BMW Wallbox, which can charge your BMW up to three times faster. To ensure your BMW's peak performance and enhance the efficiency of your plug-in hybrid or electric car and SUV, BMW offers BMW Charging, which is the advanced, comprehensive charging program that offers tailored solutions for both home and public charging.

Compatible with any standard 120V home outlet.

Catch a charge at any power outlet with the Occasional Use Cable, included as standard with every BMW plug-in hybrid.

*Comes standard with every electric BMW purchase. No additional equipment needed.

Optimized charging at home via 240V wallbox.

Install a BMW Wallbox in your home for fast charging between daily drives. With the BMW Wallbox, you can fully charge the battery of your BMW plug-in hybrid three times faster than with the Occasional Use Cable.

*Purchase separately. You can order a BMW Wallbox here. Requires hardwired installation and may require electrical upgrades depending on your electrical panel capacity.

On-the-go and public charging.

BMW's partnership with EVgo gives you access to more than 35,000 Level 2 chargers nationwide through your BMW Charging app. And with the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, you can be assured that your plug-in hybrid has the range to get you where you want to go.

*For public charging within Chicagoland, we've seen average prices of $1-$4 for about 2 hours of charging time. However, it depends on the individual unit's owner to determine pricing.

Maintenance/Service of Your Electric or Plug-in Hybrid BMW

BMW vehicles, including their high-voltage components, do not require any special or scheduled maintenance outside of the factory-scheduled maintenance recommended for all new BMW vehicles. For all recommended factory-scheduled maintenance, BMW offers the comprehensive BMW Ultimate Care program at your authorized BMW Center, which guarantees no-cost maintenance for the first 3 years after purchase.

WARNING: Do not do any repairs on the vehicle yourself. Electrical cables and/or components that have come loose may only be corrected by an authorized BMW workshop. Schedule service today!

You Can Qualify for a Federal Tax Credit on New BMW All-Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Owning a BMW plug-in hybrid or electric comes with many financial incentives. You may be eligible for federal tax credits of up to $7,500, in addition to other state incentives. You could also save up to $1,500 in fuel costs within five years.

On August 16, 2022, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) into law, which amends the current U.S. EV tax incentives. Under the amended law, only qualified EVs and PHEVs assembled in North America will be eligible for the $7,500 tax credit.

Please talk to a Patrick Client Advisor for more information and eligibility.

Fuel savings are based on annual fuel cost calculation between 2020 BMW 330i and 2021 BMW 330e by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Prices at time of calculation (February 2020): $3.10/gallon of premium grade gasoline (national average) and 13 Cent/kwH electricity (national average). Savings and fuel consumption may vary based on vehicle, share of miles operating on electricity, driving style, driving conditions, fuel and electricity costs, accessory use, and ownership length. IEPA EV Rebate

Starting July 1, 2022, customers who purchase fully electric vehicles will be able to apply to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) for a $4,000 rebate ($1,500 for electric motorcycles). Only one rebate will be issued to a purchaser in any 10-year period. Click here to learn more.   Note: This is not a dealer or manufacturer-supported rebate program

RANGE FACTORS
BOOST YOUR RANGE
With ranges from 250 miles to over 300 miles from a single charge (depending on model), all-electric BMWs can go the distance. That means you'll be ready for anything - whether you're navigating commuter traffic or taking your next adventure out of town. The EPA range is calculated under specified conditions in a controlled setting.* It's important to know that electric vehicles perform differently in real-life conditions. But if you know how to take advantage of the factors that expand your range, you can maximize your vehicle's estimated range.

*EPA estimated range is the approximate number of miles that an electric vehicle can travel in a mix of simulated city and highway driving before needing to be recharged. This approximation is based on the EPA's standardized testing procedures, performed in a laboratory setting under specified conditions. Estimated range may be achievable, but actual range may vary due to multiple factors, including but not limited to: driving style, road type, terrain, and outside temperatures.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ELECTRIC RANGE

Electric range is the maximum distance an electric vehicle can travel before the battery needs re-charging. Electric vehicles are rated for their operating range on a single charge and their energy efficiency by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
BMW electric vehicles have more than enough range to satisfy your needs, and you can take that range even farther by knowing the factors that boost electric range.

Drive smoothly, gently accelerate, maximize regenerative braking, go easy on cabin heating and cooling whenever possible, and pre-condition your vehicle while plugged in.
The latest all-electric BMWs can easily manage the majority of journeys you are likely to take without needing to recharge the battery. The main factor to consider is how many miles you drive on an everyday basis and how often you drive more than 300 miles in a single trip.
With the large battery size of the BMW iX and i4 models and access to a large nationwide public charging infrastructure through BMW Charging, range loss is less of a concern. Follow all the tips to maximize your electric range and you’ll get the most out of your all-electric lifestyle.
Wheel size and design, as well as tire width and type, play a role in the fuel efficiency of all vehicles. In the case of electric vehicles, efficiency impacts your electric range. Generally speaking, fuel efficiency increases as a result of lighter weight, improved aerodynamics, and lower rolling resistance tire type. Your BMW Center will help you to choose the best combination of wheels and tires for your needs.
