BMW Brand History

The BMW name stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH (or Bavarian Motor Works). BMW was created in 1917 from the Munich firm Rapp-Motorenwerke. The company was incorporated into Knorr-Bremse AG in 1920 before being refounded as BMW AG in 1922. It was the successor of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG, founded in 1916. 1916 is therefore considered BMW's founding year.

BMW wasn't an automotive manufacturer until 1928. The first BMW small car was built under license from the Austin Motor Company in 1929 then was superseded by the company's own design in 1932.

In 1975, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) was established as the United States importer of BMW luxury/performance vehicles.

What Does the BMW Logo Mean?

The first key to the meaning of the BMW logo are its colors: white and blue are the colors of the State of Bavaria in Germany, home of BMW. A 1929 BMW ad depicts the BMW emblem, complete with the four colored quadrants, in a spinning airplane propeller. The interpretation that the BMW logo represents a propeller has endured ever since.

Noteworthy Innovations

The BMW Group has always encouraged innovation. This forward-looking philosophy has enabled and defined a number of important milestones in the company's history.

  • 1935 - BMW R 12 and R 17 with the world's first hydralic front fork - At the 1935 German Motor Show, BMW not only presented two new motorcycle models, the R 12 and R 17, but also a worldwide innovation - the world's first hydraulically-damped telescopic forks.
  • 1936 - BMW builds the BMW 328, the most successful sports car of the late 1930s - The BMW 328 set new standards with its innovative lightweight chassis and aluminum cylinder heads. Its streamlined silhouette ensured enhanced aerodynamics and eye-catching appeal.
  • 1954 - BMW 502, the world's first aluminum V8 engine for series production - At the International Geneva Motor Show in early 1954, BMW presented the type 502 with a 2.6-litre, eight-cylinder alloy engine. With 100 horsepower, this model was one of the fastest touring cars on the market.
  • 1983 - BMW 524TD: the first BMW diesel and world's fastest series-produced diesel sedan - In 1983, BMW's first-ever diesel car immediately set the standard. The new six-cylinder engine offered excellent driving performance and very smooth running with good fuel economy. With the world's fastest series-produced turbo diesel engine, BMW demonstrated in impressive style that signature BMW driving pleasure and diesel technology are not mutually exclusive.
  • 1991 - the BMW E1: the first fully-fledged thoroughbred electric car of the modern age - BMW presented the BMW E1 at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 1991. This was the first car of the modern age designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle. Its electric engine, built specifically for this model car, had an output of 32 kW/45 hp and was located in the rear axle with direct transmission to the rear wheels.
  • 2001 - BMW 316TI with the world's first fully-variable valve-train control - BMW became the first manufacturer worldwide to introduce a fully-variable valve lift system in the new and innovative VALVETRONIC engine in the BMW 316ti. The new engine delivered a maximum output of 115 hp.

Sustainability

BMW is sustainable to its core and it starts in Leipzig, where BMW I vehicles are assembled at one of the world's most modern and eco-friendly factories. The process is entirely powered by the factory's own wind turbines. At the Moses Lake plant - one of the largest CFRP plants on earth - energy is drawn from locally-sourced hydropower. Producing an i3, from first bolts to final inspection, takes 50% less energy and 70% less water. BMW's promise of energy efficiency extends beyond manufacturing to the raw materials that make up every BMW i vehicle. Open-pore eucalyptus wood is hand-selected not only for its beauty, but also for its status as a sustainable resource. And the fine leather upholstery is tanned using olive leaf extract, a natural process that protects against fading and wear.

Patrick Dealer Group's History with BMW

In 1904 Detroit Michigan, Hanley Dawson IV's great grandfather made the acquaintance of the legendary Henry Ford. Ford's automobile manufacturing plant was located across the street from the bank where he worked. His great grandfather offered to sell used cars returned to the Ford plant, and eventually was granted the opportunity to sell new cars off the assembly line.

In 1907, his great grandfather was awarded the first new Ford franchise in the Midwest.

In 1951, Hanley Dawson Jr. took over the dealership from his father. 20 years later, in 1971 the family business moved to Chicago, on the corner of Rush and Ontario Street, and Hanley Dawson Jr. was awarded the first and only Chicago Cadillac factory retail branch operation. Hanley Dawson Jr. and his son, Hanley Dawson III, ran that business known as Hanley Dawson Cadillac until the early 1990's.

In 1977, Hanley Dawson III set out on his own and started the Patrick Dealer Group, named after his youngest son Patrick.

In 1981, Patrick BMW was the first expansion of the Patrick Dealer Group. It was established at 700 E Golf Rd, Schaumburg, IL 60173.

Patrick BMW is Celebrating 40 years in 2021!

As we reach this milestone with one of our pinnacle brands, we took the time to reflect back on Patrick's relationship with BMW and how it's grown and changed over the years.

In 1981, BMW was welcomed into the Patrick family. From there, the relationship only grew. In the late 1990s, Hanley Dawson III served as the president of the BMW Dealer Council, further cementing a strong relationship with other BMW dealers and manufacturers. His work on the council was instrumental in fostering relationships that have continued to grow.

Patrick is fortune as well, to find itself the closest BMW dealer in proximity to the BMW Midwest Regional Offices. Having such a close working relationship has been instrumental in maintaining the excellence of the BMW brand.

Why choose Patrick BMW? "Our promises are what make the Patrick Dealer Group different. Our friendly and helpful team members will be happy to help you throughout the process. Our professional sales staff really listens to your wants and needs. For us, it isn't just about making a sale, but creating a positive relationship that will hopefully have a long-lasting future.
