Tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle. Without them, you’re not getting anywhere. At least not anytime soon. Tire maintenance is one of the most important things you can do for your vehicle, but it goes beyond just getting new tires, it means taking care of the ones you already own.

Some ways to take care of your existing tires is getting them rotated and balanced. We at Patrick BMW cannot only do that service for you, but we’re going the extra mile in this month’s blog and will explain to you the importance of both services.

Rotating tires

Rotating tires extends the life of your tires and increases your safety on the road. Tire rotation involves moving tires from one position on your vehicle to another. Typically this involves moving the front tires to the rear and vice versa. Tires would also change sides in this scenario with left and right rear tires changing sides when moved to the front of the vehicle.

Tire rotation is typically recommended every 5,000 to 7,500 miles but these recommendations can vary depending on the manufacturer.

Tire rotation is important as it ensures that your tires are wearing evenly, which can extend the life of the tires and save you money. Tire wear can also affect the handling of the car.

Balancing tires

Tire balancing is an important piece of vehicle maintenance as it’s when all four tires are tested for weight distribution. Each wheel has weights attached to them. Over time, each of your four tires lose tread due to wear. When this happens, your tires may become unbalanced due to more wear in some places than others.

The tires are usually placed on a tire balancing machine that spins them around at a designated speed. The machine measures and senses the weight distribution of the tire as it spins. If any abnormalities are noticed by a technician, then they add small weights to the wheel.

Manufacturer recommendations vary on how often you should get your tires balanced, but it’s recommended, on average, to get your tires balanced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

Getting your tires balanced is important because it can affect how your car drives on the road, by getting your tires balanced it makes for a smoother ride and makes your drive train perform better as well. Tires that have not been balanced also affect fuel efficiency.
