Gaskets are small, fragile automotive parts that serve a big purpose inside your vehicle. They form seals between parts, prevent leaks and ingress of unwanted fluids and debris. Since gaskets aren't widely known, our Patrick BMW service department techs put together this brief intro for your benefit.

Lightweight but Tough

Gaskets withstand tremendous pressure and fluctuations in temperature on a daily basis. They have to be pliable enough to form a tight seal between parts, but they must also be tough enough to withstand lots of abuse. The most common gasket materials are:
  • Composites
  • Copper
  • Steel
  • Graphite
  • Neoprene
  • Silicone

Gaskets last about five to 10 years if you take good care of your ride. That means keeping critical vehicle fluids at the right levels, using coolants recommended by the manufacturer and maintaining advisable head bolt torque. If that makes no sense, don't worry. Our seasoned Patrick BMW service techs can see to all of the details during your next service visit.

Which Gasket do You Need?

The type of gasket you need varies. Gaskets that take the worst daily poundings tend to blow first:
  • Fuel supply gaskets
  • Cooling system gaskets
  • Differential gaskets
  • Transmissions gaskets
  • Engine gaskets

Depending on driving conditions, mileage, driving habits and climate, you may need one or more of the above gaskets and other gaskets. A tech can determine this during a routine multi-point inspection.
